Good Shepherd Housing, 2025 to 2026

Measuring and redesigning a housing-based career program

Good Shepherd Housing runs Career Power, a career and college success program for young people from affordable housing communities. Its leaders and donor wanted to know what difference the program was really making, and then what the program should become next.

In spring 2025 we evaluated Career Power using a 'but-for' analysis, benchmarking participants against economically disadvantaged peers at the same high schools, along with a student resilience survey. We presented the findings with 3 possible paths forward. Good Shepherd chose to explore and realign the program, and over the next year we interviewed students and families, wrote a Career Power model playbook and coaching guide, built a referral partnership framework and MOU template, prepared donor briefs, and designed a Student Success Fund and the campaign to launch it.

Good Shepherd received the evaluation report and a redesigned program model, and in 2026 signed referral partnership MOUs with 2 affordable housing partners.

Educating Non-Profit Executives

Through the Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership at Georgetown University, Viking’s Maria Posey and Veena Pankaj teach a 4-hour course on social impact evaluation which guides participants on a journey to clarify their pathway to impact and explore how metrics, data, and organizational culture come together to enable an organization to continuously learn and grow.

This has been such an impactful few days. Maria and Veena did great with covering the content, engaging participants, and giving us opportunities to ask questions. It was so helpful in my own learning and processing today.2024 Course Participant

Inspiring Changemakers

As part of the United Charitable’s Changemaker Series for its member organizations, Viking facilitated a 2-part workshop on social impact evaluation. The first part of the workshop included a lecture on how to develop outcome and impact metrics. The second part involved participants’ applying the learning by mapping out how they might operationalize evaluation and learning in their organizations. We concluded with a group discussion to explore insights, challenges, and A-ha moments.
